What is Centering Prayer? Centering prayer is a traditional form of Christian prayer rooted in the word of God , both in scripture and in the person of Jesus Christ. Centering prayer is offered to help cultivate interior silence and to prepare sincere followers of Christ to receive the gift of contemplative prayer. It is a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Is Centering Prayer a technique or relaxation exercise? No. Centering prayer may result in relaxation but that is strictly a side effect. It is not to be confused with certain Eastern techniques of meditation such as Transcendental Meditation. It is not a form of self hypnosis or a para-psychological experience. It is simply a method leading to contemplative prayer. Does Centering Prayer replace or exclude other forms of prayer? No. Centering prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; it simply puts other kinds of prayer into a new and fuller perspective. If one accepts the notion of prayer as primarily a relationship with God, it becomes obvious that one's relationship with God can be expressed without words. Centering prayer simply moves one to a deeper dimension of intimacy with God. Is attending a weekly Centering Prayer group important? Yes. While centering prayer is done privately most of the time, a weekly sharing of experience in a small group has proven to be very supportive. A centering prayer group can serve as a source of encouragement to keep going. By sharing the experience of centering prayer with others, one's own discernment of the ups and downs of the practice are sharpened. |
